Mexicans and Mexican-Americans mark Cinco de Mayo

Happy 5 de Mayo

Posted: Tuesday, May 5, 2020. 1:23 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Today is the anniversary of a much-remembered military conflict in northern neighbor Mexico.

On May 5, a force of 4 thousand Mexican soldiers drove back an invading French force twice their size near Puebla in southwestern Mexico.

While they lost the city a year later, the French were routed by 1867 and Mexican president Benito Juarez declared the 5th of May a national holiday, known as Cinco de Mayo.

The holiday is marked by commemorations in Puebla and elsewhere is not generally considered to be as big of a deal in Mexico as in the United States, where Mexican-American people generally celebrate it more vigorously.

Even with the ongoing lock-down and spike of cases in Mexico, Mexicans have found ways to celebrate at home, and others join them abroad.

The date is not to be confused with Mexican Independence day (September 16) or Day of the Dead (November 2), both given greater prominence in Mexico.

Feliz Dia Cinco de Mayo to all our Mexican friends here and abroad!
