By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought many challenges to governments and people around the world. In Belize, there is no exception. With a halt in the tourism sector, an almost complete shutdown of the public sector in April, undoubtedly there will be financial challenges resuming work.
Thousands of Belizean workers in the tourism sector lost their only form of income with the COVID-19 impact.
Just yesterday, the Attorney General informed that almost all businesses are now allowed to operate. This slight relaxation will allow for some people to resume working and for there to be at least some economic activity in the country.
But, the borders remain closed and now more than ever, it is crucial to support local businesses.
Belizean local businesses are trying to survive and supporting them means supporting their administration, staff and support staff.
The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) issued a reminder last week urging everyone to buy local.
The BCCI is reinforcing the “Buy Belizean Goods and Services To Build Belize” concept.
The BCCI says that every dollar spent on local goods and services is one extra dollar for local enterprises and local jobs.
Supporting local manufacturers, service providers and farmers will help to build Belize.
Our patriotism and civic pride is exciting waving our flags and celebrating our Belizean identity during annual celebrations, and we have demonstrated our resilience in lending a helping hand to our neighbors in need.
Belizeans all over the country responded to the call and organized food drives to assist those in the most vulnerable communities.
As we continue to overcome the many challenges posed by this pandemic, we are reminded that our resilience and strength can be displayed by supporting local businesses.
