PUP express support for Public Service Union

Posted: Thursday, May 7, 2020. 1:14 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) issued a statement today saying that the party condemns, in the strongest possible terms, “the Barrow Administration’s arrogant, disrespectful and dictatorial letter of ultimatum to the Public Service Union (PSU).”

The PUP says that the letter has no place in a democratic society where workers are seen as important and equal partners in development and governance.

The PUP says that it stands in solidarity with the PSU in calling for the government to come clean with the true number and identity of their politically appointed Contract Officers and the total dollar value of those contracts.

“Belizeans deserve to know how we got here and why.  In addition, we need to know how it is that after $500 million of Petrocaribe funds and $600 million in oil revenue, along with hundreds of millions in domestic and foreign loans, the government is now saying they are broke?  Let’s not forget that just a few months ago, they wrote off $90 million in accrued land taxes,” the party expressed.

The PUP said that if the Government is indeed broke and is serious about asking public officers to sacrifice a part of their income, then they have a duty and obligation to be honest and transparent with Public Officers, their Union and the entire nation of Belize.

“The PUP also vehemently condemns the not so veiled threat from the Prime Minister to circumvent the National Assembly and seek to have the Governor General amend the Public Service Regulations under the State of Emergency, “to give the Minister (PM) the power to alter salaries, emoluments, and increments,” the statement added.

The party further calls on the Government to respect the PSU and to address their concerns in a responsible and mature manner and we further demand that the PM cease and desist from any further abuse of authority under the guise of a State of Emergency.
