By BBN Staff: International Nurses Week 2020 began on May 6 and will run until Tuesday, May 12 with the commemoration of ‘World Nurses Day.’ The event is being observed under the theme “Nurses: A voice to lead – Nursing the world to health.”

Today, Darrell Spencer, president of the Nurses Association of Belize, noted that 2020 has been dedicated as the “Year of the Nurse” and that their importance to health systems all over the world becomes even more pronounced in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I want to say to nurses in Belize and all over the world, thank you for your service of being a nurse and caring for patients throughout the year,” Spencer said.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) highlighted the commemoration of Nurses Week on its official Facebook page today, stressing that nurses are “the backbone of the health system.”

The event is usually marked with activities all over the country, but those activities have been deferred due to the social distancing requirements brought on by the State of Emergency regulations.

In 2019 the Inter-American Development Bank published a report entitled “Education and Health: the sectors of the future?” noting that Belize will need more than 2,000 additional nurses by the year 2040, further underscoring the importance of the profession to Belize’s health system.
