San Ignacio & Santa Elena Town Council terminates 10 employees

Posted: Thursday, May 7, 2020. 9:24 am CST.

By BBN Staff: A leaked letter of termination surfaced on social media yesterday stating that “as a result of the stringent measures by the Government of Belize in light of the global pandemic of COVID-19, it has become necessary to terminate your employment.”

The termination of the ten employees became effective on May 1, 2020.

In an interview with our colleagues at News 5 Belize, Mayor Earl Trapp confirmed that the employees were sent home.

Trapp said that the employees are from the revenue department since he doesn’t see it necessary for them to be going house to house to ask for property tax payments.

Trapp said that he will use the media to encourage residents to pay the taxes.

The remainder of employees at the council are reportedly on 50% salary.
