Major crime down but murders slightly up for first four months of 2020

Posted: Friday, May 8, 2020. 3:51 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Official statistics from the Belize Crime Observatory show that major crimes for the first four months of 2020 declined from 367 to 302.

The murder count stands at 41 as of the end of April, up 3 from 38 in the same time period last year.

The Belize District accounts for 26 of these murders, with all but a handful taking place in Belize City.

Arrests for murder so far this year are in the mid-teens.

In the month of April, much of which saw Belize in virtual lockdown, there were three murders (down three from last year); and far fewer incidents of theft (2), robbery (1), and burglary (32) were reported.

The number of arrests for violations of the state of emergency and associated regulations have far dwarfed reports for other crimes. Just 41 major crime reports were made as opposed to 79 last year, while arrests are close to if not past 1,000 countrywide for curfew and emergency regulation violations.

We’ll have more in subsequent stories.
