By BBN Staff: Prime Minister Dean Barrow has scheduled a virtual press conference this morning to address the ongoing issue between the Public Service Union and the Ministry of Finance over the cost-saving measures (CSM) being implemented to help Belize’s economy cope with the downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a letter sent to Financial Secretary (FinSec) Joseph Waight, the PSU categorically rejected the CSM, for several reasons, including but not limited to the fact that the FinSec did not give a dollar value that the proposed measures would save the Government of Belize (GOB) and that there were several issues arising from public officers foregoing their annual salary increments that were not addressed by the FinSec.

Waight responded to the PSU via letter asking that they accept the measures given the unprecedented economic strain brought on by the pandemic, and noted that the Prime Minister was prepared to approach Governor General Sir Colville Young on amending the Public Service Regulations to alter salaries and benefits for public officers to achieve the desired economic relief.
