Belize Medical and Dental Association condemn ‘ill-treatment’ of medical doctors

Posted: Saturday, May 9, 2020. 9:30 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The Belize Medical and Dental Association (BMDA) issued a statement saying that it condemns the abuse of doctors.

“We are appalled by the recent cases of ill-treatment of our medical doctors. Our colleagues have been in the front line risking their lives, working long hours, giving up time with their family and children during this difficult time for the safety of our people,” BMDA said.

The BMDA shared that there is a case of a medical doctor who was transferred from his place of employment in Dangriga to Hopkins. The doctor was reportedly told by the Manager of the Southern Health region that the transfer was due to misconduct.

“This doctor has been very vocal since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic about the deplorable conditions and the lack of resources that the healthcare providers were working with in that region,” BMDA stated.

The BMDA said that it is an act of victimization and goes against the public service regulations.

In addition, the association says that it is dismayed by the act by the police who targeted a doctor that has been employed since 2012 at the San Ignacio Hospital. The doctor was arrested and charged for providing medical attention at his private office when the SI prohibited private practice of public doctors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The BMDA says that it condemns this part of the SI because it goes against the core of the profession, which is to serve the fellow human being in need.

“It is an undeniable truth that many times patients wait for endless hours to be attended in our public  hospitals. Moreover, during  this   time,       many clinics in the hospitals are closed  since the hospitals are running on emergency mode.  This leaves the general public with limited options for healthcare since many medical doctors working in the public sector also have private clinics,” the statement added.

The  BMDA further denounces the double standard and arbitrary application of this  SI.
