Belize compares well with Mesoamerican region in COVID-19 pandemic

By Aaron Humes: With just 18 cases of COVID-19 reported through May 9, only Nicaragua has fewer cases reported in our area, and with all but 2 recovered, no country has a higher recovery rate, according to data provided by the Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero on social media.

Nicaragua has more deaths, five, and fewer recovering patients, seven.

The next highest figure is 773 for Costa Rica, followed by El Salvador (784), Guatemala (900), Honduras (1771) and Panama (8070). Of course, each of these countries have greater populations, as do Mexico, Dominican Republic and Colombia whose figures are also listed.

Mexico’s case listing is given as 31,322, with 3,160 deaths reported. As we have reported, there are concerns that the Government there have underreported totals, especially in the capital Mexico City.

The Government of Belize has promised significantly fewer restrictions if, as expected, Belize makes it through Monday without another recorded case. It would be 28 days since the last was announced.

However, the borders with Mexico and Guatemala and the International Airport remain closed for the time being.
