Global COVID-19 cases near 4 million, deaths approach 300,000

Posted: Sunday, May 10, 2020. 7:59 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in Wu Han, China last December to today, May 10, 2020, almost 4 million people have contracted the virus and over 273,000 people have died as a result, according to Reuters.

Originally starting out being called the “Wu Han Virus” while scientists tried to learn more about the virus, the designation changed overtime when it was discovered that it was a strain of the coronavirus that was normally found in bats but crossed over to humans through people eating infected bats. The designation for the virus now stands at severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes the disease COVID-19.

Reuters’ data shows that, currently, the virus is present in over 210 countries and territories with the  United States, Spain, and Italy have the highest prevalence of the virus respectively. The US is approaching 1.3 million cases, almost a quarter of the global total, and over 77,000 deaths. Spain has over 240,000 cases with over 26,000 deaths and Italy has over 217,000 cases with over 30,000 deaths.

Belize has kept its number of reported cases among the lowest in the world (18 confirmed cases and 2 deaths to date). However, health officials insist that the threat is far from over as cases are still rampant in every neighboring country.
