By BBN Staff: After the protest that occurred this morning at the bridge in Melchor de Mencos, BBN has confirmed that Belizean authorities have allowed the trucks to enter, allowing the trade of corn to continue between Belize and Guatemala.
The protest was held by Guatemalans who were upset because Belizean authorities had halted some trucks that usually enter Belize and pick up corn exports at Spanish Lookout.
Due to the situation, the bridge at Melchor was blocked preventing the passage of other cargo trucks that were bringing supplies into Belize.
The trucks were seen lined up on the Guatemalan side of the border. These cargo trucks are also now allowed to enter Belize meaning that the importation of hard goods from Guatemala is allowed to continue.
The problem reportedly stemmed from an immigration issue that was eventually resolved.
