Caye Caulker Soup Kitchen needs your support

Posted: Monday, May 11, 2020. 6:33 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major economic impact on Caye Caulker despite the island not having a single confirmed case. The downturn in tourism is said to have cost around 85 percent of the islanders their jobs and caused hardships on residents all over the island. To offer support in these difficult times some 11 restaurants and over 50 volunteers banned together to form the Caye Caulker Soup Kitchen (CCSK), an effort geared towards alleviating some of the COVID-19 burden ensuring that residents have something to eat six days a week.

Realizing that offering just one meal a day may not be enough, the CCSK has started a GoFundMe page that that has currently reached over $35,000US. The CCSK is pushing to reach a target of US$55,000 in order to provide an additional meal, either breakfast or dinner.

“Caye Caulker has always held a special place in all visitor’s hearts, whether they are Belizeans, expats or tourists, with the island’s unrivaled beauty and its local charm. However, as we face the Corona Virus, villagers have created an outreach of love and support for each and every Islander that is as inspiring as any story across the world. It is a labor of love, love for the island and its population and working together we make it through these unprecedented times,” the CCSK said.

Those wanting to contribute to the cause can do so by going to www.gofundme.com/f/caye-caulker-soup-kitchen-for-covid19-relief. to make a donation.
