Nurses Association of Belize wishes all nurses Happy International Nurses Day

Posted: Tuesday, May 12, 2020. 3:38 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Nurse Association of Belize (NAB) issued a statement wishing all nurses a happy International Nurses day.

Today was set aside in dedication of the nurses across the world to honor them and thank them for their services.

This year 2020, specifically, has been dedicated as the year of the nurse and the midwife.

The theme under which we honor the nurses this year, “Nurses: A voice to lead-Nursing the world to health,” is a very significant one.

“It is as if the creators of the theme foresaw that COVID-19 would come upon us and fashioned a theme to express just that. Because that is what we find ourselves doing in this pandemic; nursing the world back to health. As the country moves toward a recovery stage in the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses must reflect on the struggles of preparation and continued deliverance of services to the people of the nation, in order to take what we have learned and make corrections to the process for smoother running in future emergencies. We must constantly update our country’s contingency plan and also that of our families. We must search to find a balance between our jobs and family; will and strength; along with seriousness and good cheer. Nurses, you have done these well. Good job,” NAB expressed.

NAB extended gratitude to the Lord Ashcroft COVID Relief Fund for their very generous donation to the people of Belize through the Nurses Association of Belize, and to the smaller donors who gave what they could, in the form of goods and services to the frontline workers who stood firm in the presence of grave danger and performed their duties.

“We were made promises by the government that are yet to be materialized. We, however, continue to lift our heads as nurses always do and carry out our various functions. Nurses, do not despair. We have a job to do and we must do it to the best of our abilities,” NAB added.

In addition, NAB says that the government has gone on to suggest that in reward for a job well done in the midst of adversities, that it is time to take austere measures such as further staffing and salary cuts of the already underpaid and overburdened backbone of the healthcare team.

NAB calls on the government to show that it is serious and get rid of all the exuberant allowances to senior officers, desist from extending unnecessary contracts, stop the wanton wasting of government finances and collecting large sums of monies outstanding to the people of the jewel before discussing any cuts.

“Nurses, remember, that for the last few years, the theme has been ‘Nurses, A voice to lead’. We must lead nurses. We must lead with our voices. Nurses, as you go through your day please know that your services are truly appreciated by the people you serve. Know that your family loves you and are there for you. Be there for each other as well,” the statement ended.
