By Aaron Humes: Belize’s number of COVID-19 cases remains steady at 18 as of yesterday, but the worry has shifted to keeping the Jewel almost hermetically sealed to prevent a second wave.
Belize has now conducted more than 1,200 tests and 18 persons are under investigation – at the moment the same as the number of confirmed cases.
The Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero, stated that the figures are random samples from across the country.
Testing will now be reported three times per week rather than daily.
Dr. Manzanero also shared an infographic comparing Belize’s figures with our Central American neighbors and the Dominican Republic, an associate member of the Central American Integration System.
The region is approaching 25 thousand cases, recording 24,563. About 14,000 of these are still active and 9,000 recovered.
Of the 827 deaths, nearly half (402) are in the Republic and 30 percent (249) are in Panama which has the most cases on the isthmus, followed by Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Nicaragua in that order, with Belize bringing up the rear.
Two Guatemalan deaths are attributed causes other than COVID-19 despite these persons having tested positive.
Belize’s borders remain sealed and illegal entry carries a $5,000 fine, jail for 2 years and mandatory quarantine for 21 days from your own pocket.
Honduras and Guatemala, our closest neighbors, have between them more than 2,700 active cases and even more confirmed cases – more than 3,200.
