Carnival gets 600 percent more bookings for August cruises

By Aaron Humes: Could Belize see a tourism boost earlier than expected?

With Prime Minister Dean Barrow suggesting foreign tourism could reopen in July if numbers of COVID-19 cases lessen in North America and people are more confident to travel with a treatment regimen or vaccine in place, or at least rapid tests to single out potential sick people, there is a glimmer of hope for the currently unemployed.

And Carnival Cruise Lines, which has projected an August return for some of its ships, has seen as much as a 600 percent increase in bookings for those cruises, according to website Fast Company.

Despite some of the early horror stories about being trapped on cruise ships and high death rates, Carnival is getting big business from younger, healthier tourists and those heartily sick of lockdown in the U.S., according to a representative from Cruise Planners, an American Express Travel Representative who spoke to gossip website TMZ.

Bookings for the month of August 2020 are up 200 percent over last year, and prices are dirt cheap – as low as USD$28 per night.

The company said in its statement last week that it is still in dialogue with U.S. officials as to how to proceed.

Cruises are leaving from Miami, Florida, and Galveston, Texas, in mid-August, with no other cruises scheduled.
