Ashcroft: Early election would allow new Prime Minister to begin to resolve issues brought by pandemic

By BBN Staff: In a segment of Open Your Eyes this morning on Channel 5, Lord Micheal Ashcroft discussed the impact of COVID-19 on the Belizean economy.

Ashcroft said that politicians will need to take the residual risk and decide between the medical health or economic health of the country.

Ashcroft also noted that when an economy begins to crash, politicians will need to make tough decisions.

“The Government of Belize can’t be borrowing and borrowing. Where is the foreign exchange? We import a lot, and so that political risk at some point has to be taken,” Ashcroft said.

In addition, Ashcroft discussed the upcoming general election.

“Where Belize is concerned right now we also have a general election that is coming up and some of the decisions can be clouded by political decisions as well as medical decisions or economic decisions. And in an ideal world, I would like that elections come early so that whoever the government is and whoever the next Prime Minister is, has a 5 year mandate to be able to start to resolve these complicated issues without having too much of a political consideration in the decision making of what the nation is facing,” Ashcroft stated.
