Ashcroft: Polling in Belize reveals that people think the country is going in the wrong direction

Posted: Thursday, May 14, 2020. 3:55 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: On Channel 5’s Open Your Eyes this morning, Lord Micheal Ashcroft, said that he has conducted private polling in Belize over the years, which asked Belizeans basic questions.

Ashcroft says that one of the questions posed in the poll was whether or not Belizeans think the country is going in the right or wrong direction.

“A significant majority said no,” he noted.

He shared that standard questions included whether or not the public feels better off today than it did 5 or 10 years ago and that responses allow you to feel the mood of the people.

The poll was done pre-covid and when asked about the major issues, responders said at the time, those were crime and corruption.

According to Ashcroft, previous polls revealed to be accurate when conducted before the general elections.

When asked which party, Ashcroft would support for the next election, he said that it depends on the parties’ prospectus to recover the nation and who he has confidence in leading the nation for the next 5 years.

Briefly touching on his relationship with the Prime Minister, Ashcroft says that when they meet there is humor and reminded that at one point PM Dean Barrow was his attorney years ago.

“All disputes are business and I don’t take it personally….. he has given me a hard time and I hope that I have given him a hard time… He has used every trick in the book and changes the law everytime he feels he is losing… I hope he has found me a worthy adversary,” Ashcroft stated.

Ashcroft said he may one day write a book about the BTL saga.
