Guatemalan cargo trucks allowed to come into Belize

Posted: Thursday, May 14, 2020. 12:45 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Following an impasse this week, the Government of Belize (GOB) has made provisions for Guatemalan truck drivers to come into the country to bring in imported goods and buy goods from Belizean producers.

Minister of Immigration Beverly Castillo explained that the truckers were not being allowed into Belize as reported cases of COVID-19 continue to rise in Guatemala; however, new protocols have been put in place to allow for trade to continue. As a part of those new protocols, the truckers will need to be accompanied by a guard from customs but that the cost of that guard will have to be negotiated between the parties doing business.

The truckers, who buy and sell goods in areas such as Spanish Lookout and Shipyard, used a line of 18-wheelers to block off the road leading from Melchor de Mencos into Belize earlier this week when they were informed that they could not enter the country to go about their business.
