Immigration issue at Western Border resolved

Posted: Thursday, May 14, 2020. 1:04 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Reports are that the issue at the Western border has been resolved and cargo is moving through the border. On May 11, Guatemalan truck drivers protested blocking other cargo trucks from entering Belize.

According to a report from Channel 5 Belize, Immigration Minister Beverly Castillo said that there is a new set of protocols to allow the Guatemalan truck drivers to enter Belize and purchase grains.

In the interview, Castillo said that the new procedures are for safety measures.

Castillo said that because Belize’s neighboring countries have a high level of COVID-19, the Immigration Department is taking precautions.

One of the protocols is to have a guard accompany the truck to their loading area and the importer or exporter would bear the costs.

Castillo said that under the state of emergency, the borders were open only for cargo but under special conditions to ensure safety.
