Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses support for Taiwan’s inclusion in WHO’s global COVID-19 efforts

Posted: Thursday, May 14, 2020. 1:36 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Today Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via social media, expressed continued support for Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization’s (WHO), global efforts in combating the COVID-19 pandemic as it has proven to be one of few countries with strategic and technical capabilities in efficiently fighting and containing the spread of the virus.

“The global COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the necessity of the full participation and cooperation among all countries, including Taiwan, in global health protection,” the ministry said in its statement.

Taiwan’s Embassy in Belize responded by thanking the Ministry for its staunch and unwavering commitment to the “stronger-than-ever Belizean-Taiwan diplomatic ties.”

In recent months Taiwan has help to assist in Belize’s own local COVID-19 efforts with a series of monetary and medical supply donations to the government of Belize that have been put to immediate use during the ongoing pandemic. As of writing, Taiwan has not recorded any new cases, in its population of nearly 24 million people, in seven consecutive days.

According to a report from Focus Taiwan, the country reported no new COVID-19 cases for seven days on Thursday, keeping the number of those infected at 440, of whom 383 have so far recovered.  Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus late last year, 349 of Taiwan’s 440 cases have been classified as imported and 55 as local infections, including seven deaths.
