By BBN Staff: The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how bad things can get and how quickly they can get that way. But it has also shed light on the resiliency of Belizeans and their willingness to help others in need. The latest example of Belizeans stepping up to help their countrymen comes from the Belize Taiwan ICDF Alumni Society (BTAS), which delivered over 100 food hampers to families affected by the economic hardship brought on by COVID-19.

The food hampers included soybeans, rice, oil, toilet paper, and other essential items and were distributed to homes all over Belize City, as well as to organizations that were conducting relief efforts.

BTAS President Alobi Young said that he, along with Public Relations Officer Namrita Balani, Treasurer Evan Brown Jr., and several other BTAS members gathered donations from various sources such as the Embassy of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and even Belizean students currently studying in Taiwan for the initiative. Young said the association collaborated with entities like the Ministry of Human Development, The Inspiration Center, the National AIDS Commission, and community members to determine what homes were most in need.

“There were kids in need, we had to do something,” Young said. “Some of them need to take medication, but they can’t take their medication if they can’t eat. So we had to do something for them, they are the future, you know.”

He added that the association intends to distribute more care packages as they continue to get donations from its various partners and others that feel so inclined to support the initiative. Breaking Belize News salutes the BTAS and their efforts to help other Belizeans in their time of need.
