Tropical Depression one, first of Atlantic Hurricane season forms off South Florida coast

By BBN Staff: The National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm watch for portions of the North Carolina Coast as Tropical Depression one was located 175 miles (280 km) east-northeast of Melbourne, Florida, and about 460 miles (735 km) south-southwest of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

According to the National Hurricane Center, the tropical depression is moving toward the northeast near 14 mph (22 km/h). A motion toward the northeast or north-northeast is expected tonight into Sunday morning.

It is forecasted that the depression will remain well offshore the east coast of Florida and Georgia tonight and Sunday, and then move near or east of the coast of North Carolina on Monday.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Surf City to Duck, North Carolina, including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.

Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area on Monday.

A Tropical Storm Warning could be required for portions of the Watch area by Sunday morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 35 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression is expected to become a tropical storm on Sunday.

When it becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Arthur.
