By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Eighteen-year-old 4th former Baneza Godoy is the Valedictorian of the Graduating Class of 2020 at Saint Ignatius High School in Santa Elena, Cayo. Godoy is from El Progresso/ 7 Miles in the Cayo District. She shared some of the struggles she endured during her 4 years attending high school.

Godoy told us that traveling daily to and from school was challenging especially since the students depend on the accessibility of the buses. Godoy says that if the students missed the bus, they would need to find another way to reach home.

In addition, Godoy shared that to complete her assignments, she would go to the closest village with electricity and internet to be able to submit her work on time.

The village of El Progresso/ 7 Miles is known as a hard-working farming community and it was until November of 2019, that the village finally received electricity.

Godoy thanks her family, friends and teachers for their support and encouragement throughout her 4 years.

“My family is very happy and proud of me. They told me that the effort is worth it and once we have a goal we need to work hard toward it,” Godoy said.

Upon discovering that she was the valedictorian of the graduating class, Godoy says that she was very happy because she is a good example for rural areas.

Godoy plans to pursue higher education and assist others so that Belize becomes a better country.

“I strongly encourage every student to pursue an education because it is the most important weapon that will lead you to be a successful person. Always keep in mind that you only fail when you stop trying and never give up, life is hard but you can do it,” Godoy said.

Undoubtedly, Godoy’s story teaches us that hard-work, dedication and persistence are the keys to success.

BBN congratulates Godoy on her academic achievements and extends best wishes.
