US company Moderna says COVID-19 vaccine trials show “promising results”

By BBN Staff: Moderna, a biotech company based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, announced this week that the human trials for its COVID-19 vaccine have been showing promising results in all 45 participants. The news of the favorable test results has caused Moderna’s stock value to triple since Monday, according to an article published by the financial news source Barron’s.

An article published in the New York Times said that, during the first phase of human trials, Moderna gave two doses of its vaccine to the test subjects and the result was a “strong immune response.” It was notable that the vaccine produced antibodies against COVID-19 in at least 8 of the participants and this is considered very important in the vaccine offering protection against COVID-19.

The positive test results have accelerated Moderna’s testing schedule, with the second phase involving some 600 volunteers set to begin soon, and the third phase which will involve thousands of test subjects rolling out in July. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already given Moderna the green light for its second and third test phases.

Moderna is only one of several entities working on a vaccine; others include Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech, the China-based CanSino, and the University of Oxford, which is working with AstraZeneca, all of which have begun human trials. While the vaccines being produced by the companies above are at the stage of human trials, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that over 100 vaccines are currently under development.

Several international news sources have noted that multiple manufacturers working on a viable vaccine is a good thing because the demand for a working vaccine will by far exceed the production capacity of any one supplier.
