Ministry of Health: Entire education system may change due to COVID-19

Posted: Friday, May 22, 2020. 9:23 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Director of Health Services, Dr. Marvin Manzanero explained on Ask the Experts yesterday that there may be significant changes to the entire education system in Belize due to COVID-19.

Some of the ideas that the Ministry of Health has suggested to the Ministry of Education include for students to wear face shield at school.

Manzanero said that using the shield would allow better breathing and prevent smaller children from frequently touching their face.

In addition, Manzanero noted that schools may need to adopt better hand washing stations, better cleaning of bathroom facilities and even the school calendar may change.

Manzanero explained that some of the ideas shared are for classes to commence in August or even in July. They also discussed having only key subjects taught in schools or having morning and afternoon groups to lessen the population inside of a class at one given time.

The Ministry of Health continues to advise the Ministry of Education and the ideas are guided by public health concerns.
