Belizeans from Rhapsody of the Seas cruise ship touch down in Belize

Posted: Saturday, May 23, 2020. 6:41 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes : Fourteen Belizeans are back home from a rather extended trip aboard the cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas, owned by Royal Caribbean.

Late this morning after being cleared by the Government, the group set foot on Belizean shores.

Their residence for the next 14 days including this holiday weekend is the Radisson Fort George Hotel, but it will be spent in complete isolation until they are tested and cleared of COVID-19.

At least one of the returnees gave thanks on social media for the opportunity to get home after 72 days at sea.

Their fellows from other Central American countries were also allowed to return home.

The returning group is the second to land in Belize after a group of 20 did so by landing at the Philip Goldson International Airport on Friday.

Others will follow in dribs and drabs after approval by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the borders are only open for this purpose.

Rhapsody of the Seas is technically the first ship to dock in Belize since borders were closed at the end of March. More could come if conditions change in July including the arrival of a reliable rapid test among other things.

The quarantine, at a minimum rate of $110 per night, is being paid for by the cruise ship company.
