Is cannabis the answer for COVID-19? Canadian scientists think so

Posted: Sunday, May 24, 2020. 5:31 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: A team of Canadian scientists believe that certain strains of cannabis could help to treat and even prevent people from contracting COVID-19.

A recent article published by the New York Post said that the research of researchers from the University of Lethbridge found that Cannabidiol also known as (CBD) appeared to affect the ACE2 pathways that the SARS-CoV2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) uses to enter the body. The tests confirmed that over 13 cannabis plants with high CDB content proved effective in the tests.

“Our work could have a huge influence — there aren’t many drugs that have the potential of reducing infection by 70 to 80 percent,” Researcher Igor Kovalchuk, told the Calgary Herald.

The team stressed that more research needs to be conducted but that it could lead to a viable option for both prevention and treatment for COVID-19. Their findings were published in the online journal Preprints.

The research comes at a time where numerous biomedical manufacturers are conducting human trials for a COVID-19 vaccine. Notably, the US-Based company Moderna, recently received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to conduct human trials on around 600 volunteers, and another trial that will consist of several thousand people in July.
