Belize commemorates Sovereign’s Day/Commonwealth Day

By BBN Staff: Every year on May 24, Belize commemorates Commonwealth Day/Sovereign’s Day. Today is a public and bank holiday given in lieu of Sunday, May 24.

The theme for this year’s celebration is ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming.’

The theme celebrates the organization of 54 independent sovereign states.

The day is set aside to recognize and celebrate the importance of being a part of the Commonwealth of nations.

In the United Kingdom, Commonwealth Day is observed on 2nd Monday in March.

In Belize, Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the 24 May in honor of Queen Victoria’s birthday. Many in Belize still refer to the day as the “Queen’s Birthday.”  This is why the holiday was originally known as Sovereign Day.
