By BBN Staff: Since mid-March, life as we knew it has changed considerably in every aspect of our lives in Belize. We wear masks when we leave our homes, the term “social distancing” governs our lives — we have to observe a 5 am to 8 pm curfew, stand six feet apart in lines at the bank, supermarket, and market, worship online watching live streams form our Churches, and socialize using social media rather than gathering together in each other’s homes or at the riverside or a favorite restaurant, and many of us work from home, while many others have no jobs.

One aspect of our lives that have been most disrupted is education.  Schools were closed abruptly on March 20, and online and distance education became the new normal. School graduation exercises have been canceled, postponed, or will be conducted virtually. The annual PSE and BJAT examinations were canceled, and the CXC and CAPE examinations have been postponed.

While schools and school calendars across Belize have been disrupted, Galen University’s academic calendar has remained almost unchanged. It’s Central Farm classes were transformed into live online classes on March 16, and it closed the campus on March 20. It’s Spring semester concluded on April 18, and the Summer semester began on May 4 and will conclude on July 4. Students who are scheduled to complete their degrees at the end of the current academic year will be able to do so, and announcements about Commencement Exercises will be made shortly.

Despite its virtual environment, Galen has continued to provide all its services to its student body, including counseling, academic advising, and financial assistance to those students who need it, during this time. Its Student Government Association (SGA) has found ways to support its members using social media and to serve the community through tutorial sessions for primary and high school students.

During the lockdown, the Administration, Faculty, and Staff have been hard at work planning for the upcoming academic year (2020-2021), and other major projects. The Provost, Dr. Eve Aird, said, “We have taken advantage of the disruption to revalidate our strategic plan, advance the work on our Quality Assurance Framework, and work on the development plans for our new campus.”

Galen has been known for promoting academic excellence, sustainable development, and lifelong learning for a focused “you.” It has earned a reputation for serving not only the nation’s needs but also the needs of the region and world.

Galen has been offering online classes since 2013 and has provided ongoing professional development seminars and workshops for its faculty. Its highly skilled faculty and staff, along with its technologically-driven environment positions the University to meet emerging needs for professional development in the public and private sector as well as to offer formal university education during the pandemic, and post-pandemic.

Mr. Travis Lennan, the Director of Marketing and Admissions, said that the application period for the 2020-2021 academic year remains open until August 29. The University welcomes high school and junior college graduates to consider earning their undergraduate degrees at Galen. Students are encouraged to ask about the university’s academic programs and financial aid programs.

Belizean students who have returned home to Belize as a result of the pandemic, are welcomed to continue their studies at Galen or register as a visiting student for the upcoming Fall semester.
