Belize enters 7th week without a COVID-19 case – 31 more samples test negative

Posted: Tuesday, May 26, 2020. 9:36 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: In today’s COVID-19 update, the Ministry of Health reports that 31 more samples were tested and all came back negative for COVID-19. With today’s result, Belize enters its 7th week without a positive COVID-19 case.

Despite the long period without a positive case, the Director of Health Services (DHS), in today’s session of Ask the Experts (ATE) expressed concern over the way Belizeans have been out traveling, interacting loosely and not respecting social distancing. The DHS cautioned that many Belizeans are not wearing their masks properly and in some cases are only doing so because it is the law.

In today’s update, the release advised that we must “not lose sight of what our neighbours are reporting as Mexico reports the worse day in terms of number of deaths in a single day – 501”. According to the DHS, numbers are also projected to continue to increase in nearby Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

The DHS ended by encouraging Belizeans to “continue to be safe”.
