By BBN Staff: The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) features Desiree Taneal Olivas Pascual as today’s artist of the day.

Pascual was born in the Culture Capital of Dangriga Town. She grew up in a nuclear family of six as the last child for her parents, the Olivas.

She started her educational path at Holy Ghost Primary School, attended Ecumenical High School and studied business, and later enrolled at Ecumenical Junior College where she obtained an Associate’s Degree in Accounting and Business Management.

Pascual has a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Belize and a Master’s degree in Social Science, with a concentration in Educational Leadership and Administration from Galen University.

Recently, she graduated from Ecumenical Junior College with a certificate in Leadership and presently, has enrolled at the University of the West Indies to pursue a doctoral degree in Teaching and Learning with emerging technologies with a concentration in Curriculum Quality.

During her high school years, she met and later became the wife of Mark Pascual and mothered three remarkable children, Dara, Kwesi, and Amare Pascual.

Working with children, youth and the community is where she gets her fulfillment and self-actualization. She believes that if she can have a positive impact on them that means she has accomplished her objective and passion.

Pascual loves to serve. She loves her community. She has been working with the September Celebration Committee for more than 15 years. She is currently the chairwoman of the Queen of the Bay Committee for the Stann Creek District. She is the treasurer of the Garifuna Settlement Day Parade Association. She is the co-proprietor of one of the long-existing dance Clubs in Dangriga, known as Lirahunu Satuye Dance Club/Libayan Satuye since February 1999.

Pascual’s artistic specialty is choreographing dramatic and poetic dances that translate the livelihood of the Garifuna people and culture.

Among the dramatic dances that she choreographed include: The Tribute to Andy Palacio, Paul Nabor, TV Ramos, and Alejio Beni, which were highlights at Dance X Belize over the past 5 years.

The dance club has traveled locally, regionally, and internationally showcasing these original, organized, and professional dances with the future aim of the dance club being to fulfill its obligation to share its culture internationally. An invitation to travel to Taiwan from August 2020-2022 for a cultural project under the theme: Taiwan/ Belize Cultural OneMove has been accepted.

Pascual is also the proprietor of DeeKayz BigSave, a clothing, shoe, chair covers, and table cloth rental business. She has been a teacher for 20 years and an administrator at Light of the Valley Baptist School for 5 years. She was the Assistant Education Officer for Stann Creek for 3 years. She is known to be one of the best administrators to work with.

Pascual models her life by using these quotations among others:

“Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.” – Henry Ford.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” – John C. Maxwell. and finally,

“Life doesn’t require that we be the best, only that we try our best.” – H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
