By BBN Staff: The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI), released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), says that the average cost of goods and services remained “virtually unchanged” when comparing April 2020 to April 2019.
The SIB’s data showed that all changes in all categories, whether increases or decreases, were all less than 1 percent. The “Food and Non-alcoholic Beverages” category saw a decrease of 0.5 percent when compared to last April, which the SIB says has been the general trend since 2019. Some meats, fruits, and vegetables saw price decreases, while items like eggs, beefsteak, and plantains saw an average increase.
The “Transport” category had an overall decrease of 0.9 percent, due primarily to a reduction in the price per gallon of gasoline when compared to April 2019. The “Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels” category saw an increase of 0.8 percent due primarily to higher home rental prices in Belize City, Orange Walk, San Ignacio/Santa Elena, Dangriga Town and Punta Gorda Town.
By municipality, Orange Walk had the highest inflation rate, 2.1 percent, while Punta Gorda actually saw consumer prices fall by -1.9 percent. The country’s inflation rate for the first quarter of 2020 stood at a marginal 0.2 percent
