By David Ruiz Puga: The French philosopher Michel de Montaigne is credited for having said, “Poverty of goods is easily cured; poverty of the mind is irreparable.” It was reported back in 2015 that close to one million dollars would be spent from PetroCaribe for drains and streets in Benque Viejo (Guardian, January 30, 2015). One of those streets that was resurfaced was Churchill Street.
Yesterday, a utility company came by with a backhoe and excavated part of the pavement to address some kind of pipeline issue right on this same street. Having finished the job, the cavity was filled back with dirt and the workers walked away.
No big deal. After all, we are used to things like these. However, this morning, as I witnessed the scene, I could not but question why is it that our authorities are so adept in creating such situations that draw us into backwardness and, like a backhoe, deepen the pit of social and economic misery. After all, PetroCaribe is another loan on our shoulders.
Why then did we have to spend monies out of a loan on refurbishing streets knowing well that a sound water system was not in place or, even more, in the absence of a much needed sewage system? The workers of the utility company were mandated this morning to do a quick fix. As Belizeans we must direct our efforts to counteract the plight of mental poverty; indeed, not an easy quick fix.
