By BBN Staff: An update shared by the Director of Health Services today shows that every country in Central America, except Belize, is seeing a rise in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The update, which comes from the Mesoamerica Integration and Development Project, shows that Mexico is leading the region with 81,000 confirmed cases, Colombia is next in line with  25,000 followed by the Dominican Republic with over 16,000. These countries also lead in the number of deaths relating to COVID-19.

The virus has affected over 148,000 people in Central America and has claimed over 11,000 lives. The data also shows that the number of cases within the region increased by over 38,000 between May 22-May 29.

Meanwhile, Belize continues to have the lowest number of confirmed cases and deaths in the region at 18 and 2.

The update re-emphasizes the importance of the Government of Belize’s decision to keep land borders and the international airport closed despite the economic impact doing so is having on Belize.
