By Aaron Humes: The staggering public sector wage bill – $688 million for approximately 16 thousand public servants and teachers – has led many to ask why these persons must be protected at the expense of the private sector which has had staggering job losses over the last few months.

Prime Minister and Minister of the Public Service Dean Barrow says there will be a level of attrition in the Public Service despite his efforts to continue paying public officers and teachers.

The Prime Minister hopes to boost collections and services and not have to reduce duties for officers, much less release them. Nonetheless, he does not expect we will get up to speed any time soon.

The Government will not make any new hires and leave positions that are vacant unfilled.

As for contract officers, those whose contracts are expiring will not be rehired except for specialized positions such as engineers.

The Prime Minister maintains that those working on the various infrastructure contracts will hopefully be kept on as those are paid through the international funding agencies and in at least one case, bilaterally through Taiwan.
