Tropical Storm Amanda to bring rain throughout the country; more flood warnings issued

Posted: Sunday, May 31, 2020. 7:46 am CST.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize says that the newly formed Tropical Storm Amanda, located south-southeast of Guatemala City, will support very moist and unstable weather over the country today.

The 24-hour forecast calls for cloudy skies with some showers, thunderstorms, and periods of rain, which may be heavy at times, will occur over the country, but especially over northern and central areas.

“Flooding, due to heavy and persistent rainfall over the country, is expected to continue near rivers and streams, and in low-lying and flood-prone areas. There is a very high possibility for flash flooding and landslides, especially near communities along the eastern slope of the Maya Mountains,” the Met Service said.

The Met Service also said that the Belize River, near Banana Bank, is nearing flood stage, the Rio Hondo and lower Belize River approach bank are at full-stage flooding. Other rivers are increasing slowly.

Today’s temperature highs will range from 82 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast, to 84 degrees Fahrenheit inland, and 76 degrees Fahrenheit in the hills. Tonight’s temperature lows will range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast, to 72 degrees Fahrenheit inland, and 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the hills.

Winds will be gusty, blowing East-Southeast at 10-20 knots and the sea state will be moderate-rough.

A small craft caution remains in effect for occasionally gusty winds and locally rough seas, especially near heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Low tide will begin at 11:33 a.m. and high tide will come in at 5:31 p.m.

The sun will set at 6:23 p.m. and the moon will rise today at 1:28 p.m.
