By BBN Staff: Several Guatemalan media outlets are reporting that there was an incursion of officers from the Belize Defense Force (BDF) into Guatemalan territory.
According to the Guatemalan news reports, the BDF officers were there to conduct some land measurements in the area of Santa Cruz, a Guatemalan village located in Peten. Santa Cruz also borders Jalacte, a village in Western Toledo that is located on the Belize side of the border. The Jalacte-Santa Cruz border is known for its long-established informal trade and prior to COVID-19, farmers/traders crossed the border on a daily basis.
The area is also known for frequent border and land demarcation issues, particularly as the border is not clearly outlined. Portions of some farms criss-cross the border but continue to operate as they exist in the adjacency zone.
BBN can confirm that BDF Commander, Steven Ortega, is aware of the accusation and has agreed to provide an update to BBN later today.
