By BBN Staff: The 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on Monday and Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner is asking all city residents to be prepared.
Wagner said today that the City Emergency Management Organization (CEMO) has been active since the beginning of the year looking at crisis management for tsunami warnings and COVID-19 and is now shifting gears into hurricane season mode, but stressed that each city resident has a part to play.
“But operation, again, starts with the family. Similarly, as with the COVID, you must have your family plan. We continue to stress to our residents in the city to be sure that you have your family plan put together,” Wagner said
He noted that the year has seen three named storms already, one which emerged before the season officially began, which may be a strong indicator that the season will be an active one. Wagner emphasized that while CEMO will be doing its job, each resident has the responsibility to themselves and their loved ones to be prepared.
Weather experts say that the hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30, is expected to see between 13-19 named storms, of which, between six and 10 of them are expected to become hurricanes, and three to six are expected to become major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).
