CitCo sanitation department gets new name and new uniforms

By BBN Staff: Today, the Belize City Council unveiled the designs for the uniforms of its newly named Operational Support Unit (OSU), at a brief conference held at City Hall.

Over 200 employees each received two of the new uniforms, as well as gloves, masks, and hand sanitizers to keep on their person while they are in the field carrying out their duties.

Belize City Mayor, Bernard Wagner, explained that the new uniforms and renaming of the Sanitation Department into the OSU forms a part of a rebranding exercise that the council has been working on since last year. He added that the council is trying to move away from the negative public image that the old name of the unit had culturally, and hopes that the new uniforms and name will come with a new sense of pride.

Wagner noted that the council made sure the project was seen through to completion because it values the contributions of each employee whether they are responsible for cleaning streets, parks, or cemeteries.

“Here at the Belize City Council we consider all our employees essential men and essential women…While the world and our country came to a standstill in April, these services would not be interrupted,” Wagner added.

The uniforms are expected to also make the council’s employees easier to identify to other authorities like the police and the general public.
