Veteran soldier charged for raping colleague

Posted: Thursday, June 4, 2020. 2:51 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Staff Sergeant of the Belize Defence Force, Margarito Pop, 35, is accused of raping a colleague four years older in April.

As the charge is indictable and will be heard in the Supreme Court no plea was taken and Pop received bail of $7,500 from Magistrate Emmerson Banner. He is being represented by attorney Leeroy Banner.

The alleged offence is said to have taken place on April 21 in the early hours after the complainant shared drinks the previous day with Pop and a female friend.

The Sergeant is a 14 year veteran of the Force and father of two. His attorney refused to comment, citing the sensitive nature of the case.

The Ministry of National Security recently concluded an investigation of misconduct in the Force with regard to the treatment of female soldiers, which Minister Michael Peyrefitte confirmed included a report of rape made directly to the police as well as Force Command. But it is not clear if the complaints are one and the same.
