Belize celebrates World Environment Day

Posted: Friday, June 5, 2020. 8:10 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize, through the Department of the Environment (DOE), is responsible for the protection and conservation of its untold wealth through the control of pollution. The Department of the Environment is not alone in safeguarding Belize’s natural resources.

Celebrated annually on June 5th, World Environment Day is the United Nations’ most important day to create worldwide awareness and education for the protection of the environment. Since its first celebration in 1974, it has grown to become a platform for public outreach on environmental issues and is globally celebrated in over 100 countries.

World Environment Day is the day for people all around the world to become agents of change and take care of the Earth.

Each year, World Environment Day is organized around a theme that focuses on a particularly pressing environmental concern.

The theme for 2020 is “Time for Nature.” Everyone depends on nature: 40% of the world’s oxygen comes from forests and the rest comes from the oceans; 50% of chemical medicines are based on nature; 100% of food comes from nature. Nature is needed to sustain human life. Biodiversity – the variety of life on Earth – is the part of nature that is alive.

Biodiversity gives us food, clothes, fuel, medicine and much more. It is a complex and intricate web of life relied on for survival. When one species is removed, it can trigger a domino effect with unforeseen consequences.

To celebrate this day in Belize, the Department of the Environment held two main activities: a crossword puzzle that ran from June 1st to 4th and a TikTok Video competition.

The DOE encourages all Belizeans to play a role in keeping the environment healthy.
