Mexico registers daily rise in COVID-19 fatalities

Posted: Friday, June 5, 2020. 10:44 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Mexican health officials reported a record daily rise in COVID-19 fatalities. On Wednesday, authorities informed that 1,092 more people lost their lives in 24 hours to COVID-19.

The number is double the previous daily death toll in Mexico.

As of this morning, Worldometer reported that Mexico has 105,680 cases of COVID-19 and 12,545 deaths.

The rise in cases comes after the country moved to reactivate the economy last week.

The Yucatan Times reported that in an interview published on Wednesday, a health official claimed that fatalities could be higher if social distancing measures were relaxed too quick.

Mexico now has the 7th highest COVID-19 death toll in the world.

Officials indicated that the surge in cases and deaths may be due to limited testing.

Due to the risk of accelerating infections, the Pan American Health Organization has requested that Mexico not re-open its economy.
