By BBN Staff: Belizean artist, Cadex Herrera originally from Benque Viejo del Carmen collaborated with a group of artists to complete a mural in honor of George Floyd in Minnesota where civil unrest has ignated protests all across the U.S. following Floyd’s murder at the hands of a white police officer caught on camera.
Herrera, Xena Goldman, Greta McLain and supporting artist Pablo Hernández, Niko Alexander and Maria Javier worked on the mural to honor the life of Floyd.
In an interview with BBN, Herrera explained how he felt.
“I was like everyone else who saw the footage angry and wanted to act quickly to demand justice for George Floyd. The sunflower represents loyalty and longevity I wanted to amplifying the message that we are loyal to George Floyd and Black Lives Matter movement and that his name shall live forever. Inside the flower are names of many of the black men and women who have been killed by law enforcement. The petals of the flowers radiate the light that George gave to his community and family,” Herrera expressed.
Herrera told BBN that Floyd’s name is in large bold yellow letters to visually call to action and to remember his name, inside the letters are his community, the people and now the world demanding change and for justice for George Floyd.
Herrera says that he wanted to show his community that they are there for them, that they have to stand together in the struggle for social justice and to end police brutality.
Herrera shares his work on his Instagram page @cadexherrera where he brings awareness to issues affecting society and continues to elevate Belize.
