Tourists get up-close look at stingrays off San Pedro

Posted: Saturday, June 6, 2020. 8:07 pm CST.

By Aaron HumesA group of tourists in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, were introduced to animals with a poor and reportedly unjust reputation.

A video shows a snorkel guide being approached by a group of stingrays in the sea. They followed him closely, swimming up and around him, trying to look into his eyes and see what he was up to.

The tourists in his group were very impressed and entertained with this wonderful display.

The stingray is considered gentle, intelligent and doesn’t attack except to defend itself. If you step on one, they will reflexively arch their back and sting you with their venomous barb as they would a shark or other predator.

So it is not true that stingrays are, as rumoured, deadly killing machines with a vicious nature; swimming freely, they rarely feel threatened. They also never attack humans out of aggression. We are simply not their food source.

Treat all wild animals in nature with the respect they deserve.
