Today is hot, really hot in the jewel – high temperature and high humidity to blame

Posted: Tuesday, June 9, 2020. 3:01 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Belizeans all over the country, but particularly those inland, are battling high temperatures today, and high humidity is making the situation worse.

The Cayo district, which was forecast to have temperatures around 99 degrees Fahrenheit, is actually experiencing what feels closer to 118 degrees 99 degrees Fahrenheit, due to the high humidity, which is around 52 percent.

Ronald Gordon, a climatologist with the National Meteorological Service explained that when humidity is high the air can hold more moisture, which impairs the body’s ability to cool itself down through evaporating sweat. Gordon said that while air temperatures remain in the general levels of the forecast, the body’s inability to cool itself produces a “feel like” temperature that exceeds that of the maximum temperature forecasted. He added that the advisory to avoid direct sunlight and keep hydrated becomes even more relevant in the afternoon heat.

“For somebody who is out there, probably working in the sun or so and they are not drinking enough water you can get really dehydrated and it will be a very dangerous situation,” Gordon said. “Even if you are in your house, you would want to have the house open and try to get as much ventilation as possible and make sure you drink enough fluids.”

Temperatures forecast for tonight will range from 83 degrees Fahrenheit along the coast, to 77 degrees Fahrenheit inland, and 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the hills.
