Virtual consultation scheduled on environmental impact assessment for cruise ship port

Posted: Tuesday, June 9, 2020. 1:33 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Department of the Environment (DOE) has announced a virtual consultation session on Friday, June 19, at 3 p.m. concerning the recently completed Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Port of Magical Belize cruise ship port to be built south of the Sibun River in the Belize District.

Such consultations are required by law in order to bring in the broadest concerns regarding the impact of projects such as these on the environment.

The consultation will be hosted on the Government’s Facebook page.

The Port is one of three proposed to be built in the Belize District, supplementing the Tourism Village in Fort Street. One, the Stake Bank development led by Michael Feinstein, is said to be under construction; a second, a proposed expanded container vessel and cruise port located in the Port Loyola area of Southside Belize City has run into significant opposition from cruise operators because of connections with Waterloo Enterprises and Lord Michael Ashcroft. The Port of Magical Belize concept was developed by David Gegg.
