Belizean family of nurses highlighted for heroic COVID-19 efforts in California

By BBN Staff: A family of Belizean nurses living in Culver City, California has been highlighted by a local news outlet for their dedication to their profession and family while battling the COVID-19 pandemic both professionally and personally.

Kendra Reynolds, an infection-control nurse and Director of Staff Development at the Country Villa South Convalescent Center in Culver City, was born in Belize and grew up in Los Angeles with her parents who are both also nurses. Reynolds explained her routine changing in and out of personal protective equipment when coming home from work and before picking up her three children from the baby sitter to ensure their safety.

The 36-year-old mother of three boys left her previous job to help out Country Villa South as the center pivoted to become California’s first entirely COVID-19 rehab facility. They accept COVID-19 patients from overcrowded hospitals who have acute symptoms or are asymptomatic, and can’t go back to nursing facilities until they are cleared of the coronavirus.

According to Spectrum News 1, both her parents also fell ill to COVID-19. “I remember crying in the shower on day, night two, when I got home because my dad he was so sick, and I’ve never seen him that sick before,” Reynolds said. To make matters worse, Reynolds herself also contracted the virus with mild symptoms including tiredness and loss of smell. She explained she was more concerned about her parent than herself as they are in their 60s but fortunately, they both recovered and the family has returned to work, on the front-lines battling the COVID-19.
