Department of Environment holds environmental consultation for Corozal-Sarteneja Road

Posted: Wednesday, June 10, 2020. 4:34 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Department of the Environment (DOE) has scheduled a public consultation, held virtually, on the environmental impact assessment (EIA) for the Corozal to Sarteneja Road and associated construction of the Pueblo Nuevo and Laguna Seca Bridges for Monday, June 22 at 3:00 p.m.

The EIA was made public on June 5 and was prepared by Belize Environmental Technologies (BET) for approval by the National Environmental Appraisal Committee (NEAC).

The project is to be undertaken by the Ministry of Works, supervised by the Taiwanese Overseas Engineering and Construction Company Limited S.A., at a cost of US $50 million over 54 months. 27 miles of road will be paved and the bridges, replacing ferries, constructed. Ground was broken last November.

A resident of the area says the contractors will work seven days a week until they are back on schedule after all construction projects were closed due to COVID-19. He added that the public consultation, which has the support of both major political parties, is not expected to throw up any roadblocks.

A copy of the EIA is available at the DOE’s website and in hard copy at the Corozal Town Hall and community centers in Sarteneja and Copper Bank and any questions and concerns may be sent to DOE in writing by June 21.
