Posted: Friday, June 12, 2020. 9:42 am CST.

By BBN Staff: The National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) features Vianay Bautista for the artist of the day.

Vianay was born in 1991 in Corozal Town. She began drawing at an early age, her mother took notice at about age eight of Vianay’s talent.

During her years in primary school she mostly enjoyed drawing animals.

It wasn’t until 2011, after falling ill and being housebound for a year, that Vianay began to experiment with her artistic talent in paint, pencil drawing, portraiture and poetry.

In 2015 Vianay had her first exhibit – Healing Wonders of Art, at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where twelve pieces of her artwork were displayed.

In early 2016, Vianay was commissioned to produce illustrations for TIDE (Toledo Institute for Development & Environment).

The images were published in lesson planners for the Reef Guardian Schools.  The same year, Vianay was a featured artist in the Identity Youth Art Exhibit at the Corozal House of Culture.  She has also been a regular contributor at the annual Arte con Voz de Mujer Exhibits.

Life has been very busy for Vianay over the past few years, beginning with learning the skills of mural painting and graffiti art through workshops offered by the Corozal House of Culture.

She is an active member of the Corozal Street Art Movement (CSAM).  In 2017/18 Vianay traveled to Spain to study Spanish in Valladolid under the Erasmus Mundus Student Exchange Program furthering her education in the Spanish language.  She also used this opportunity to explore art history through the museums in Spain and Portugal.

Returning to Belize, she was able to finalize her internship, as well, she studied a certified online course of art therapy from the Divulgación Dinámica University in Seville.

In 2019, Vianay graduated from the University of Belize with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education Spanish.

She also instructed a summer art program teaching the basics of drawing with various mediums; preparing herself for the 2019/20 school year as she was to about to become the first Visual Arts instructor at Corozal Community College, a dream she has been able to achieve!

Another milestone came her way in 2019, Vianay married her best friend and boyfriend of 8 years, Eric Vivas in September.

Currently Vianay is an instructor of Spanish at both the day and night divisions of CCC, as well as the Visual Arts instructor.  Interested persons may contact Vianay via her Facebook page—Vianay Illustrations.
