Four Countries in Europe to pay US$843 million for COVID-19 vaccine

Posted: Monday, June 15, 2020. 11:45 am CST.

By BBN Staff: ABC News reports that Italy, Germany, France, and the Netherlands are coming together to spend 700 million euros (US$843 million) to purchase 300 million doses of potential COVID-19 vaccine made by the British company AstraZeneca.

The article, published today, said that the countries will have the option to buy a further 100 million doses of the vaccine and that the quantities will be distributed relative to the population sizes of each country. The deal coincides with various other countries seeking to secure advanced purchases of vaccines for their citizens. The United States and the United Kingdom have reportedly signed similar deals with AstraZeneca.

The company issued a statement on Saturday saying that it made an agreement with the Serum Institute of India on a license for the supply of an additional 1 billion doses of vaccine, principally for low and middle-income countries, noting that its current manufacturing capacity stands at 2 billion doses.

Deliveries for the four European countries will reportedly begin at the end of 2020.
